CLOSED SYSTEM INTERMITTENT CATHETERS

What is a Closed System Catheter?

A closed system catheter is a sterile, pre-lubricated catheter contained within its own collection bag that is attached to the catheter. This type of catheter is ideal for patients who have a history of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) or who are immunosuppressed. The closed catheter kit normally includes the following items but can vary depending on the manufacturer:

  • Pre-lubricated catheter
  • Collection Bag
  • Additional lubrication
  • Exam gloves
  • Underpad
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Iodine or povidone swabs
  • BZK

Most closed system catheters have an added feature called an introducer tip. An introducer tip allows the pre-lubricated catheter to bypass the highest concentration of bacteria located in the first few millimeters of the urethra. This unique design has been proven to decrease urinary tract infections.

Closed systems are sometimes called “touch-less” catheters because if you use them correctly, during the insertion process, your hands and any bacteria on them never come into contact with the catheter directly. This greatly minimizes the risk of contamination and bacteria being introduced into the urethra. The self-contained collection bag enables you to void your bladder anywhere you have privacy, eliminating the need to look for a bathroom.

CLOSED SYSTEM INSURANCE COVERAGE

There are various clinical reasons why a closed system intermittent catheter may be prescribed and its recommendation is always at the discretion of your healthcare provider. Medicare will cover a closed system when it is medically necessary. At least one of the following requirements must be met:

  • Reside in a nursing facility
  • Immunosuppressed
  • Radiologically documented vesicoureteral reflux while on an intermittent catheterization program
  • Spinal cord injured female with neurogenic bladder (during pregnancy only)
  • Recurring urinary tract infections (UTI) while on a program of clean intermittent catheterization.

Recurring UTI’s are considered when you experienced two documented UTI’s within a 12-months period, while on a program of clean intermittent catheterization with lubricant.
